How to Build Discipline in 6 Easy Ways

How to Build Discipline in 6 Easy Ways

There are many aspects to starting a business.

People will quickly tell you about the importance of marketing, the different sales techniques, and everything you need to know to bring a product to market.

But the truth is that without the necessary discipline, all information loses much of its meaning. However, discipline is not something you are born with. It takes constant work and dedication, but the results are significantly more success and better obstacle management.

Here we look at six ways to improve your self-discipline and give you all the skills you need to become a productive entrepreneur.

Do you have little time? Here are the key takeaways

  • Reformulate the concept of “discipline”: Many people view discipline as punishment. Refocusing will help you build.
  • Start small: Elite-level self-discipline doesn’t happen overnight.
  • Set clear (and reasonable) expectations: It’s great to meet expectations, but only if they are achievable.
  • Create a list: Nothing beats a good to-do list!
  • Take conscious steps to minimize distractions: Removing distractions is a great way to pave the way for self-discipline.
  • Technology is your friend: When used correctly, technology can greatly assist your journey towards self-discipline.
  • Every temptation is an opportunity to become stronger: You always have to work on discipline.

The importance of discipline for founders

The world of a founder is certainly a roller coaster ride! There are days when business is booming and others when you face challenges you may never have thought of.

However, with the help of discipline, founders can ensure steady progress even in the face of adversity.

Personally, I am often surprised by distractions or unforeseen circumstances that need to be resolved. But it is discipline that ensures that such situations do not derail you. Remember that building a business is not a sprint. It’s a marathon that requires structure and focus, two things that discipline can provide.

Entrepreneurship is full of obstacles and a disciplined mindset allows you to remain calm under pressure, assess situations and make pragmatic decisions.

6 ways to become more disciplined

Reformulate the concept of “discipline”.

First of all, it is important to understand the term discipline. Have you ever heard of a child being “disciplined” for bad behavior?

Or maybe a teenager who people call indisciplined when he misbehaves? There are countless examples of these interactions as we grow up, and so we often see discipline as a response to bad behavior or something we don’t want to do.

However, building self-discipline shouldn’t focus on forcing yourself to do things you don’t want to do. Instead, it should be viewed as a positive change for future success.

For example, if you were trying to become more helpful, you would have much more success if you chose healthy habits that you enjoy. The same applies to business too. First, choose habits and goals that you truly care about to establish self-discipline as a ingrained habit.

Start small

It’s also important to start small and not try to do everything at once. Going back to our health and exercise example from earlier, if you’ve ever tried to exercise more, improve your diet, and reduce your alcohol consumption all at once, then you know how difficult it can be!

Sure, you might be able to stick with it for a short while, but in the end you’ll probably miss some aspect that demotivates you so much that you give up.

Instead, you’ll want to have much more success if you focus on one of these aspects first, make it a habit, and then move on to the next.

The same applies to business too. Focus on small successes rather than creating the perfect company overnight. Start by consistently working on your project at the same time every morning. A small achievement like this is great to set the tone and show immediate progress.

Make a list

Next on the list? Make a list!

One of the most important aspects of self-discipline is understanding what needs to be done. There’s nothing more satisfying than checking things off your to-do list, and that act alone can provide valuable motivation for further work.

If you’re not used to trading with self-discipline, you may be wondering what to do next.

The best way to overcome this is to start your day by writing down everything you want to accomplish. As you develop more self-discipline, you can even expand your to-do list to a week or a month in advance.

There are several tools that can help you create such a list, but I personally prefer a simple Google Sheet where I list my plans by the hour, by day, by week, and by month.

It’s not a perfect system, but no list making system is! Importantly, knowing that you are being productive and disciplined with your time provides a good starting point.

Take conscious steps to minimize distractions

I don’t know about you, but I often look at the time on my phone and then realize that a whopping 20 minutes have passed since I started scrolling through social media.

Cell phones aren’t the only distraction founders face, but they can be a big distraction. Try to leave your phone outside of your office while you work unless you are expecting a call or working on your social channels. Small steps like this can greatly minimize your distractions and keep you focused on the things at hand.

Another solution is to set alarms for specific projects during the day; This prevents your entire day from being wiped out by an overflow.

Technology is your friend

While some technologies can cause distractions, other technological tools can also benefit you on your path to self-discipline. Platforms like Trello are great for organizing your tasks, ChatGPT can be an excellent tool for content ideation and brand brainstorming, and there are many others that can help you increase your productivity and motivate you to continue to be disciplined. When tasks take up time, distractions can seem more tempting. However, the right technology can help tasks get resolved quickly, so you can move on to the next project without unnecessary breaks.

Every temptation is an opportunity to become stronger

Finally, it is important to remember that self-discipline is not easy. Because if it were, everyone would practice it!

However, each temptation you avoid helps you exercise your discipline muscles so that you can more easily avoid the next temptation.

Eliminating temptation wherever you can in life will make a huge difference in the effort you can put into your business ventures and will certainly help you turn your fledgling idea into a resounding success.
