What is Canva?
As a business, it is crucial that your website and marketing materials match the high quality of your services or products.
However, since your time and effort will go in different directions, taking evening classes to become a graphic design master is probably not at the top of your to-do list!
This is where Canva can help.
But what is Canva? Here I explain what Canva is and how you can use it for your business in 2025.
Do you have little time? Here are the key takeaways
- Canva is a great alternative to more advanced (and expensive) alternatives like Adobe Illustrator.
- The Canva Free version is very comprehensive and allows you to do most things except access to certain premium templates or create transparent backgrounds.
- To get the most out of Canva, I recommend first signing up for the free version of the tool, getting familiar with the interface, and then investing in the affordable Pro version for maximum impact.
What is Canva? Everything you need to know
First: What is Canva?
Canva is a fantastic design tool that allows businesses to create high-quality marketing materials, regardless of their design skills.
The tool features a clever drag-and-drop interface, making it much simpler (but also much more user-friendly!) than more advanced tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
Therefore, it is a much more accessible tool for creating professional designs, especially considering the pricing. “Canva Free” is an incredibly free version of the tool that allows you to access almost all aspects of the platform completely free of charge.
I’ve been using Canva myself for several years and only started paying for Canva Pro to access some of the premium templates about a year ago. It’s a brilliant tool for people like me who aren’t advanced enough to get the most out of Adobe products, but still need to create the odd Instagram post and blog header every now and then.
What is Canva and how can it be used for business?
And with that in mind, let’s take a look at how Canva can support your design process and help you create a range of content forms for your marketing efforts.
For brand values
Canva can be a great tool to start brainstorming your potential brand assets. If you’re like me, you’d consider yourself creative, but sometimes you need a little extra help to get started. With Canva you get a little help and more!
Simply log in, click “Create New Theme” and search for “Brand.”

As you can see, the first option that appears is “Brand Board.” Click on it and you’ll immediately be presented with some brilliant branding templates.

Let’s say I’m starting a new gaming company called “Gaming Graphics” that focuses on video editing and graphic design for gaming companies. A quick scroll and a few tweaks and we have a great starting point for our brand!

For social media content
Canva is also great for creating social media posts, with templates for TikToks, Instagram posts, Stories, and Facebook posts.
Using our gaming graphics example, here are a few quick-fired posts based on our branding from above and the templates available on the platform.

For blog headers and additional visual elements
When it comes to creating high-quality, truly engaging blog content, you need to be able to create excellent blog headers and additional visual elements like tables and infographics.
These captivate your readers and also serve as useful SEO signals for the Google algorithm!
With Canva, you can use Canva’s infographic or blog header templates to create high-quality content, even if you don’t have a graphic design background.

For lead magnets
Another essential aspect of any marketing effort is a strong lead magnet, such as a free e-book. Again, it’s important that these marketing materials look good, and Canva can help you ensure your work looks professional and of the highest quality.

Things to know: If you want to ensure your entire team has access to Canva, multi-person subscriptions are also available: Canva Teams and Canva Enterprise (ideal for large organizations).
